This is an academic research Masters, of two years (120 credits), taught entirely in English. It is a Master’s degree with an international reputation in the field of Social Sciences, as demanding, intense and rigorous as the best graduate programs in the United States and Europe.
The aim of this Master’s is to teach students to undertake high level research in the key themes of the Social Sciences. The Master’s provides advanced and interdisciplinary training in the Social Sciences, by stressing the importance of methodology and quantitative analysis.
The Master’s covers three fields: Political Science, Sociology and Economic History.
During the first year, all courses are common, with two differentiated blocks: on the one hand, substantive courses in sociological analysis, social stratification, comparative politics, economic history and political economy; on the other hand, methodological courses in statistics, game theory and research design.
During the second year, there are some additional methodological courses and students can choose one of the three specialization tracks (political science, sociology and economic history).
Master’s students can continue their research via the PhD in Social Sciences offered by the UC3M Department of Social Sciences in collaboration with the IC3JM.
The Master’s faculty is composed of members of the IC3JM and the Department of Social Sciences of the Universidad Carlos III and visiting professors.

The Carlos III University offers five full two-year scholarships for the Master in Social Sciences. Four of these scholarships are financed by the Department of Social Sciences and one, the Juan March Servera scholarship, is offered by the Carlos III-Juan March Institute.
These scholarships are open to any student (Spanish or foreign) with excellent academic performance, a high level of English and a strong motivation for study and research in the social sciences.
In addition, the IC3JM offers three tuition grants for the two years of the Master’s program, with an amount equivalent to the cost of tuition for a student from the European Union (approximately 2,900 euros). It is not necessary to be a citizen of an EU country to apply.
The scholarships corresponding to the second year may be suspended if the student does not pass one or more courses during the first year of the Master’s program. This condition applies to both full scholarships and tuition grants.
